Blood Covenant by Alan Baxter

dark medium-paced

The copy from Twisted Retreat is not only stunning, but it was an amazing addition to my bookshelf for content as well as it’s glassy cover. I find it incredibly hard to weed out good horror books that appeal to my tastes - I love gore, but I get bored if it’s gore without plot or reason. I love monsters, but need a strong character to follow to truly invest in the story.

At the risk of being biased, this was a breath of fresh air to the genre. We follow our emotional tether in a family of 6 driving back to their land after the winter away, and we get the time to see their dynamics and personalities before the story pulls them into their unfortunate situation. My horror-centric heart wishes that we could have seen more of the initial haunt of the hotel, and at some points found some of the inner-thought patterns of the characters a tad repetitive (not the grief, I liked that every tragedy has such a clear impact on those around them, and lasting impact that sways their decision making/lingers) overall I was invested from every page and was surprised a few times at who ends up where. Highly recommend and I hope to find more of the author's stories on my shelf soon!
