The Institute by Stephen King

5.0

Wow. I LOVED this. And that makes me happy. I went through about an 18-month phase, starting the summer after sixth grade, where I read every Stephen King book I could get my hands on. I especially loved the short story collections. After that I moved on to other authors (Crichton, Higgins Clark, Grisham, Piccoult) in addition to what school required.

I tried a few non-scary King books but they didn’t hold my interest. When The Dome came out I was bummed that I just couldn’t get into it despite it sounding like something I’d love.

This one’s been popping up for me lately so I figured it would be a good summer read. And it sucked me in just like the old days. A great, long, sprawling novel with all the hallmarks of King. Characters who are so easy to picture and hear, succinct writing, creepy plot lines.

I mostly listened to it but yesterday I was at a bar and didn’t want to have earbuds in so I paid the $8 to get the kindle version so I didn’t have to stop while enjoying lunch. Finished today and might just have to dig up The Dome and give it another go. Because I’m once again craving King.
