The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

2.0

I wish I'd lived in another one of my lives that didn't read this book. Basically the modern Christmas Carol/It's a Wonderful Life by way of the multiverse, the latest fashion. In a world with Into the Spider-Verse and Everything Everywhere All at Once, this bore of a book doesn't need to exist; it can simply blink out of existence like Schrödinger's cat: the most abused concept by storytellers who have no idea what it is. If you like books filled with stale exposition, you will love this. Everything was so obvious from start to finish that maybe Haig should've consulted chatgpt for interesting things.

Makes sense that this pop-contemporary bestseller won the Goodreads award but wasn't nominated for critical awards. By month five of lockdowns, when this title was released, everyone's brains were full of mush. So it makes sense how this mold could rise to the top. I will now retreat back into reading non-contemporary fiction for another ten to twenty books again before being convinced to waste time reading more.

**Spoilers territory:
Would've liked to know what happens after the final page of the book more than the events of the book. Also, the conservative messaging of having a baby being your best life is blehhhh.
