The Meaning Of Night by Michael Cox
5.0
This is an excellent book. It has been on my list to read for several years and sitting unread on my shelf since last Fall.
The book is somewhat long and somewhat dark but very engaging. It is a confession of murder from the start. A senseless, random murder. And then it is all of the backstory that adds up to an amazing tale of circumstances driven by revenge.
It features one of my favorite literary devices - a narrator that you can't quite trust. Is he telling the truth? Is he at least telling the truth as he believes it? Edward is not a flat character by any means. He loves, he hates, he is brilliant and he is foolish. And by the end, you understand his motivations and want him to succeed in his horrible plot.
The setting is Victorian London. What's not to love about that?
