A chance encounter in an airport between two men, who are somewhere between acquaintances and strangers, leads to a confession from one of them. As confessor Jeff unfolds his story the reader must begin to wonder what exactly it is he is confessing. Is this the confession of a humble man’s charmed life he deep down believes he doesn’t deserve, a fraud admitting his duplicity, or a story of obsession gone awry? It brings to mind questions of fate or destiny, and if we have any power to intervene in them. It is a short, fast-paced novel that won’t let you make up your mind until the final page, and then you may want to read it again after that. I was confused by the choice to have two characters share narrative duties; it didn’t cause confusion in following the story I just did not understand why exactly, but the conclusion may factor into that as well. Great read for someone who needs some fun reading for a weekend or vacation.
