The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
4.0
I really wish I had more background into this story before going in. I would've had so much more love for it.
This is a kelpie story where every October they rise from the sea and humans flock to this small island to compete in the deadly race as riders claim a kelpie and dash across the beach for unimaginable fortune and glory. Our 2 main characters are competing, the previous winner verses a newcomer and first girl to compete. The stakes are high and the riders are lucky if they make it to the finish line alive.
I really did enjoy this story but I couldn't fully connect to either POV. The plot was good, the character development was good, the writing was good. I don't know what went flat for me.
I can see why many people reread this book at or around Novemeber 1st and maybe I'll try it again now that I have a better background for the mythology and history of the story and its kelpie origins.
