Five Broken Blades by Mai Corland

3.0

I'm back! I was reading at a bit of an unsustainable pace and got myself into a reading slump. But I'm slowly coming out of it. This was a book I was really excited by (five very different killers come together to pull off an impossible assassination) but ended up not loving it as much as I wanted.

I listened to this on audiobook so it wasn't too terrible to keep the 6(!) different narrators straight. But some characters were definitely more likeable than others and unfortunately the ones I didn't like (cough cough Euyn) felt like they had slightly more time than the others. I will also say that the narrators must have recorded in isolation because sometimes when speaking as another character their voices were WAY off (for some reason the Euyn narrator made Mikail almost British) which did affect my enjoyment somewhat.

I liked the structure of the book, the chapters were plentiful and short which must have been a necessity with six points of view. But I found the actual plot pacing a bit off, a little too much lead up and not enough time with all our characters together to really lean in to the found family trope it was going for. Speaking of tropes, if you have a romance trope you like, it's in this book. All the characters are immediately horny for one another. And hey I love romance but all of these insta love romances gave me the ick for some reason. I feel like the book really took a turn at the end that recaptured my interest but then it was over. I'm still undecided if I'll read the next one.
