Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas

5.0

2015 Review: "Heir of Fire" is easily my favourite in the 'Throne of Glass' series (I haven't read "Queen of Shadows" yet though). It has this hold over me that I cannot explain, and the writing and the character/world/plot developments are truly magical. I love the relationships formed within this instalment - most especially the dynamic between Rowan and Celaena, as well as the too-real declining of the friendship between Dorian and Chaol. I loved the way Maas explored grief, regret, acceptance, fear, self-loathing, loss, bitterness and so, so much more. Furthermore, I thoroughly enjoyed references to "The Assassin's Blade", squealing with delight when a 'queen with wine red hair' and 'Pirate Lord Rolfe' were mentioned, giving me hope that their appearances within the series will come full circle, along with other enjoyable characters, in "Queen of Shadows".

My only regret is not being able to finish this sooner thanks to uni work.

2017 Review: My previous assessment still rings true - Heir of Fire is my favourite instalment. Not only for the reasons I've already mentioned above, but also because of all that HoF represents.

HoF represents the real Dawn of the conflict of this series. We are introduced to almost ALL of the key players in the wars to come. We are introduced to characters who will go on to shape the course of Erilea's history. We are introduced to the terrors that will be unleashed upon Erilea. We meet one our two true enemies.

We are shown what can be overcome.

It's just as Chaol said - we are given hope.
