This series has been on a downward trend to me and I’m sad to report that this continues.
I really wasn’t a fan of the new race that got introduced in the last book and we are spending a lot of time with them again in this one. Those characters all just feel very same-y and uninspired.
I’m still enjoying the main character but a lot of the fun of the series in the past came from her interactions with others and that just wasn’t present here anymore because I didn’t care about the other side. So the first half of the book ranged from meh to didn’t like it.

It got more interesting once we got into the character progression part of this book and that’s also about the time the plot picked up. We got some nice look into the overarching Mystery of the series and also the world's most terrifying inhabitants.
We also got to meet another new race and while they also felt somewhat bland at least their vast knowledge about all the intricacies of the world is very compelling and did result in some interesting conversations and also some very humorous interactions because of socially awkward Elaine.
However I can’t help but feel like comparing these world building events to my other web serial I’m reading, The Wandering Inn, and this series is just miles behind what pirateaba is crafting and this aspect is most noticeable to me with the different Fantasy races.

There also was a small interlude at the end where we got to see a different perspective for a pivotal event within this book and this one was really compelling and still has me excited to what the next book has in store.
