The way child death was handled in this book was absolutely horrendous.
First of all, there was much too graphic a description of the CHILD's body.
Second of all, if you are going to use this sensitive subject in a book, it comes with the responsibility to handle it respectfully and responsibly. Did Micalea Smeltzer do that? NO. Instead, she had Salem not grieve at all, even though she had basically become a mother figure for Forrest. Rather than be upset about finding Forrest's body, she was worried that Thayer was being too depressed and would break up with her. What the actual fuck!? I was hoping that in the second book, we would get some closure and see how they cope with the loss. But no. Instead we're treated with an accidental pregnancy trope and a SIX YEAR time jump where (at least 20% in) the only mention of Forrest is a passing mention of Thayer having an alcohol issue.
