Monica by Daniel Clowes

5.0

So good. I had no idea what to expect from Monica but was immediately taken with the elevated 1950s-60s-style comic art, use of color, and Clowes' writing style, in this series of interconnected short stories. The title character, Monica's life plays out through the course of the stories and takes us through the Vietnam war to the present day. What she goes through feels relatable and compelling even with the touch of the uncanniness that Clowes brings in. He's really a master of atmosphere and of creatively blending elements from across genres - war, romance, horror, mystery, and more - into one woman's story.
