Dear Diego by Elena Poniatowska

4.0

A quick read novella (about 85 pp, small format book, large print). Poniatowska (born in Paris - Polish or Russsin parents? - moved to Mexico, not unlike her main character here) is a well regarded journalist and fiction writer in Mexico. Her novels often are based on real life characters )(Leonra Carrington). She has had a handful of her works translated into English, but this is the only one that ever got any notice for her.
Diego Rivera was married to Russian emigrant artist Angelina Beloff for 10 years, right around WWI, when they lived in Paris. This is a series of letters she might have written to him over a 3 month period in 1922, shortly after he left here in Paris to return to Mexico.
Despite her respect for his artistic talent and devout love for him, he comes off as large a jerk as he does later in life. Another story of a female artist giving over her time and talent in order for the male to practice his.
Poniatowska does quite well in presenting us with the thoughts and insights of a visual artist, in fact one of the better presentations of this I have seen in print.
Well worth the evening it will take you to read this. I'm on the fence about picking up other work by her.
