Once by Morris Gleitzman

Heartbreaking story but so well told. Felix is so innocent and doesn't realise what is happening to the Jewish people of Poland. It's painful as a reader, having more information than the characters and watching them walk into terrible situations. Obviously, quite intense subject matter for young people but still quite an important historical event time to learn about. Gleitzman explains at the end of the book what a personal connection he has to the subject and I think that is shown in the writing. The ending left me wanting to know more about all the characters, not just Felix and Zelda.
