Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding

The summary on goodreads could not be anymore apt – Bridget Jones is me. I’m so late to the party – I’ve never read Bridget Jones, neither have I ever seen the movie. I’ve never been inclined to pick this up, thinking I’d never be able to relate to a woman in her 30s as a teenager but how silly I must have been to pass this book up.

Bridget Jones is a career woman, and a singleton. She drinks, she smokes and she’s one of those girls always on a diet and constantly calculating her calorie intake. Bridget is always pressured by her parents and those around her for being single and as her mother says, “tick tock, tick tock”.

I absolutely loved Bridget’s diary. It is funny, whacky and dramatic – but at the same time, very relatable. The diary format was simple and allowed us to get inside her mind and understand her better as a character and the relationships she forms with her friends, family and peers.

Bridget’s diary is so engaging, from her family drama to finding her true love to her silly friends’ antics. I loved Bridget’s friendship with Tom which was very endearing to read about. I also loved Mark Darcy – I fancy myself one too!

Bridget marches to the beat of her drum, which makes her so lovable. If you’re like me and have yet to get into her head, I highly recommend you do so (what with the latest hoo-ha and a half about the latest installment to the series).

Absolutely hilarious and fantastic!
