Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
3.0
I’ll return to the book someday when I have time to read the text. The plot was too complicated to follow as closely as I’d have liked solely as a read-aloud. Certainly rich enough to warrant another go.
Note on the audio edition: BBC Audio full cast dramatisation, 2012. While I appreciate the depth a cast dramatization (American spelling purposefully chosen here) can lend to an audio book, it can have its pitfalls as well. The dramatic opening scene was difficult for me to understand because of the voice actor voicing Provis/ Mr Campbell/ Magwitch. When he layered accent, acting, and background sound effects, I missed most of his dialogue, which is pivotal to the foundation of the book. I acknowledge 50% of the misunderstanding is my own responsibility as an American, unaccustomed to this particular English accent.
