Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames

3.0

Not a bad story or characters by any means, but the perpetually quipy narration felt like reading a Marvel movie. While this style may have been entertaining in 2017 when this was published, it's now tired and tends to cheapen the stakes, all while leading to very inconsistent tone. I wasn't really sure how serious to even take the final battle when the wizard, famous for his Viagra-esque potions, is bumbling around with nary a scratch in the midst of what is supposed to be a near endless sea of monsters in land and air.

Furthermore, the author does a lot of explaining versus letting the reader live through the characters, which takes away from what would otherwise be action packed scenes. He switches voice from that of the protagonist's, Clay Cooper, to a narrator's in a voice-over vignette style that really halts whatever flow he's built between these moments. Again, it is all very quipy, winking-at-the-camera sort of humor that just falls kind of flat now that we've been over saturated with it.

If you can overlook or even enjoy that sort of humor, you'll probably like the story, as there are good bones here. If you like Marvel movies, this is the fantasy story for you.
