In the Hall with the Knife by Diana Peterfreund
3.0
In the Hall with the Knife is a Clue Mystery novel about the inevitable murder of the headmaster of Blackbrook Academy. If you ever watched the movie or played the game, you will recognize a few names like Mr. Body, Mustard, Peacock, Plum, Scarlett, Green, White, and Orchid (though Orchid is a newer addition to the game). There are many nods to the original movie and board game like this, which was the main thing that intrigued me about this story. I also wanted something a little spooky for October to listen to, and what better way than a fun murder mystery?
This was a fun story full of nostalgia, which is what I was looking for, but that being said, I did expect more. There were aspects that made their way into the story that weren't explained well, seeming to crop up just to fill empty space. I have a feeling it may have been intentionally written that way, but for me it just felt thrown in and detached. I also wanted more mystery, I had pegged the killer way early on, and I just like when a story like this throws a wrench into the plot that makes you realize your speculations were way off. I also wanted more information into the characters to connect to them more, it made sense not to know everything right off the bat, but to pull things out of their backstories as the plot thickened would have been helpful to feel more connected to the characters. I really didn't care for any of them, which is something that makes reading the story kind of blah, so I would have loved to know the characters more.
I thought it was a fun read, kind of perfect for the time of year, so if that's something you're looking for I would definitely recommend it! The nostalgia factor was really fun and that interested me, but the story itself was a little lack luster.
