A menacing, creepy story that blooms out of the ideal of summer. You can't help but sense something is amiss as soon as you start reading and you gradually feel your heart sink as it comes to its mortifying conclusion. Reading afterwards that Shirley Jackson actually received death threats for writing this only makes her sinister message more tangible.
