The Last Guests by J.P. Pomare

4.0

Hoo boy! I’ve been all set to go to the launch of this book twice now so thought I must read it before we try for round three. Pomare is very good at conjuring tension and leaving the reader with a pervasive sense of dread and unease. If you like your thrillers scary and a little stressful then this is definitely for you. The pacing here is wonderful, something so many thrillers and novels in general muck up. Pomare is a master of unexpected twists and turns. Cain and Lina have their secrets and their struggles and the way these are untangled shows a clever web of plot, character and storytelling. The heart of this book is questioning the lengths any of us would go to in order to protect our families. This has strong Top of the Lake vibes.
