Mary: An Awakening of Terror by Nat Cassidy

4.0

So, yeah...that happened. This was a fever dream of a story and as someone that seeks out "weird" I loved it! The only reason I took a star away is because it's very long and I don't think the story would have suffered if it was edited down a little bit. As a horror, this was great fun; like great gory fun. Trigger if you get the all over body ick from bugs, maybe don't read it then. What impressed me most was the fact this very well written story that, at it's core, is a story about the medical (not only medical) misogyny women deal with constantly while navigating their hormones and menopause and everything else that comes with having a uterus, was written by a male. He very accurately portrayed an inner monologue of a female going to the doctor (he's going to ask me when was my last period) and exactly what that appointment looks like. Even if the story ended up being bad (which it thankfully was not) that would have made it worth the read. The author's note at the beginning and the afterward were as fantastic as the book itself so make sure you read those too!
