When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir by asha bandele, Patrisse Khan-Cullors
5.0
The Black Lives Matter movement is often misrepresented and demonised for no good reason. I received so much hate and backlash when I vocalised my support of the movement, claiming that I was supporting terrorists who hated white people. How could I, a white person, support such a thing? So the title of this book immediately jumped at me and I read it the moment I got home. This is a genuinely heart breaking, eye-opening memoir that strips the movement down to its bare, honest bones and speaks from the soul. Khan-Cullors' descriptions of how she realised that Black people were living wholly different lives to her white peers at school, the horrible vicious patterns with absent fathers, drug abuse, prison--it's truly gut wrenching and opened my eyes to so many things I, as a British white person, knew nothing about. This book urged me to educate myself more, which is something I aim to do this year.
