Transmogrify! as edited by g. haron davis was a lovely, diverse anthology that soothed my battered trans heart. Having an entire YA anthology centered on trans and gender nonconforming narratives is a gift, and I hope it paves the way for future collections on different themes.

As with all anthologies, some stories enthralled me and others were not so much my jam. A few of my standout favourites were:

“Dragons Name Themselves” by AR Capetta and Cory McCarthy, a heartwarming story about a class assignment to watch a dragon egg gone “wrong” (but really, right)
“Genderella” by Mason Deaver, a captivating reimagining of Cinderella starring Ella, a trans lesbian
“In a Name” by Aydia Shonibar, a story about an academy student’s journey to master magic and earn a name
“The Door to the Other Side” by Emery Lee, a story about a teenager who guides spirits to the Door of the afterlife

If you liked the All Out series of anthologies, this is definitely a great pickup in the spirit of those books. I freely recommend it to anyone looking for some short, magical tales about marvelous trans and gender nonconforming teens.

Thank you to Edelweiss and HarperTeen for an advance review copy. All opinions are my own.
