The Death Cure by James Dashner

5.0

Well... I have a few things to say about this book.

The reason I gave it five stars is quite simple, I read the book so quickly that I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it. That being said the whole series had a lot of problems and things that don't sit right with me. Mostly what bothers me about the trilogy is that most of the characters...well you simply don't get attached to them.

Sadly for me the only character I truly got attached to ended up dying. The character I'm talking about is Newt. Don't ask me to explain but for some reason Newt became the only reason I read the series. There was something about his character that just made me love him and gripped me. He is the sole reason why I put up with these three books and I won't even lie about it. So, to me, it's upsetting to see reviews of people who barely gave his character a second thought because he meant A LOT to me in the whole series but then I think that maybe other readers found his character as flat as the others.

That being said when I read his death scene it ripped me apart. He was so desperate and so so so close to the Gone that my heart broke into tiny pieces. All the things he said in this book drove ME closer and closer to insanity because I loved him so much and I didn't want him to go crazy and I didn't want him to hurt his friends. What drove me crazy in this story was finding out what would happen to Newt and once he died...the fire and drive I had to keep on reading died a little but not enough to keep me from reading altogether. What made the whole thing worse for me was that I was hoping against hope that they would find a cure and save him...that turned out great for me (yeah, right).

Anyways...the only other character I liked in the series was Minho but my love for him didn't surpass that of me simply liking a character. Meanwhile Thomas, Teresa, Jorge and countless others could have died and I wouldn't have cared. They're characters were flat or their characters were simply built up for you to hate them so how could you possible wish them good.

And then you never really get answers! Thomas refuses to get his memories back (which had been what he's been wanting in the first and second book), then this Ava Paige "saves" them miraculously and ta-da everything is fine and dandy!

To me what made this whole series good was the fast pace, the action, the flow of the writing. Apart from that this series isn't that great. Most of the characters don't have much depth and if you didn't cling on to the love you had for one of the characters (like I did with Newt) then I really don't know why you kept on reading (unless you also had the same pull of the fast paced story that for some reason kept you glued to the pages).
