Like a House on Fire by Cate Kennedy
1.0
Bleak.
I gave this one star, not because it's badly written, but because it's depressing and upsetting. I don't need fiction to know what it's like to be powerless in an uncaring world. The few acts of defiance or positive outcomes in these stories just serve to drive home how little any of these characters can do to improve their circumstances. This is the death of hope and I feel worse for having read it.
