I Kill Giants by Joe Kelly
5.0
fuuuuuuuuuuuck.
I found out about this from some listicle that google news recommended to me that was something like "10 offbeat comics that were made into movies" and it was like, "the protagonist is a somewhat unlikable weirdo who seems totally crazy, and it turns out she's not crazy at all." (You can watch the trailer for the movie here. It's pretty close to the comic.)
I was expecting kind of a cranky Sailor Moon or a nerdy Buffy. She gives off Louise from Bob's Burgers vibes. Based on what I saw it seemed like it was going to be good even though there's clearly the threat that she might be a furry.
You spend most of the comic trying to figure out if she's a badass or an actual crazy person. It's legitimately hard to tell. I KNEW she wasn't crazy going into it, and I STILL thought she might be crazy. She crosses the line into complete jerk territory more than once and you're like whoa, whoa, whoa, wtf Barb. Joe Kelly makes sure you're not entirely sure if you should root for her by the time the shit hits the fan. So if you're hoping for a perfect hero, you're not going to get it. Be prepared for flaws.
I kinda wish she was the shiny hero I was expecting, but in a lot of ways this is better.
