Kusama: The Graphic Novel by Elisa Macellari
5.0
I knew very little about Yayoi Kusama going into this graphic novel biography and this was an amazing starting point. Elisa Macellari approaches Kusama's life with her own artist's eye and puts together an impactful story with a purposefully limited palette and effective page and panel layouts that emphasize the most profound emotional moments. Macellari shows Kusama's difficult childhood as well as her art, relationships and mental health struggles in a way that manages to somehow be both nuanced and concise. I looked up more about Kusama after and found a few events that were not included that some might feel deserved more attention, but it seems to be a solid introduction and I found it very moving and beautiful.
