Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

5.0

It has been awhile since I read Carry On which Rainbow Rowell decided to write after she couldn't let go of these characters after finishing Fangirl. This might be based on Harry Potter fanfiction but I'm one of those few people who didn't enjoy Harry Potter, so it still surprises me how much I enjoy this book. I have been wanting to reread this awhile and since Wayward Son (the second book) is being released soon I decided September was perfectly good month for it.

“What you are is a fucking tragedy, Simon Snow. You literally couldn't be a bigger mess."

Simon isn't like normal people. Not only has he been called the chosen one since he learned that magic exists but while other people would be worried if their roommates got missing-- he thinks his is up to something. Simon is the most powerful magician but he's also afraid to use his powers because they're so unpredictable.

I could relate to his love for food.

Simon is roommates with Baz, who he thinks is a vampire. Simon always think he's up to something and talks about him so much that Penelope makes him promise to only talk about Baz 10% of the time. Baz is strong, graceful and ruthless, even in the football field. I love this slow burn enemies to lovers ship so much and it's still my favorite lgbt+ ship. Can I read Wayward Son already?

“You were the sun, and I was crashing into you. I'd wake up every morning and think, 'This will end in flames.”

He has two best friends Penelope and Agatha. I don't like Agatha at all. Simon might not be the best boyfriend but it seems like Agatha didn't even like Simon.

It's not just her crush on Baz and holding his hands while dating Simon but rolling her eyes when Simon was injured. Agatha should've just broken up with Simon if she knew she didn't have feelings for him. Agatha isn't even a good friend to me. She rather Simon spend the Christmas alone than feel uncomfortable. Spending Christmas with Agatha's family must've meant the world to Simon since he didn't have any family but what did Agatha do? Lie to her parents that Simon had other plans because it would be "awkward."

I just found her selfish and hypocrite, like when she found out about the truce. I wonder which Harry Potter character she's based on...

Penelope is focused and powerful. More important she's always there for Simon. Penelope befriended Simon in his first week at Watford (school for Magicks). I enjoyed the world in Carry On a lot, even the politics which I usually dislike on books but I didn't really understand the vampires. They still age?

There were some nice references like to Batman and Pokemon.

The beginning of the book might have been a little boring (because no Baz yet besides characters talking about him) but all the Snowbaz content and Simon's friendship with Penelope made me give it full five stars. I also enjoyed different POVs for once! It was nice to learn more about what happened to the certain ghost.
