Deschooling Society by Ivan Illich
4.0
"School is the advertising agency that makes you believe you need society as it is." Finally done! This book was highly illuminating though it was meandering in a great many parts. The themes Illich outlines are the fundamentals any card carrying anarchist would agree on but precious few actually attempt to live out. It's interesting to read some of Illich's ideas about the power of technology 50 years on when they've become reality yet only really to the benefit of the very ruling classes Illich railed against. That aside, his focus was always on the social and how man could be a resource a teacher an apprentice to his fellow man -- how we could care and share one to another on more equal footing. And that remains a way of being we've really yet to explore. As long as school exists, we unfortunately probably won't.
