This book came out in 2018 and I found myself wondering while reading it how much influence the Trump presidency had over it. Was it always the plan to reveal the Faceless Man as a fascist who wants to 'make England great again'? It's in keeping with his previous actions and the themes of the books thus far, so I suspect that it's just an uncanny piece of foresight and product of the series' ongoing examination into the political tensions at hand in the UK.

This book concludes a major plot arc of the series so far in finally revealing the Faceless Man's big plan. And honestly?
It's kind of a dud plan. It's super unclear to me as a reader what killing Punch will actually bring about. The why is clear enough but the what still eludes me. I guess it's supposed to eliminate nefarious intent? Or eliminate the kinds of people that Chorley believes are bringing Britain to ruin? Okay, I guess 🤷‍♂️ Chorley's death also seems like a rather anticlimactic end for Chorley, so soon after the reveal of his identity in the previous book (which also felt anticlimactic...do you see a theme here?).

There are parts I really loved about this book. Peter's voice continues to be really enjoyable to read. I liked the introduction of Foxglove and learning a little more about Molly's past. I liked learning about the origins of Punch and more river lore along with it. The aftermath of Peter's deal with Punch will be interesting to see going forward. The hints about what Guleed's been up to continue to intrigue me and I hope we'll see them in more depth soon. And of course, Peter and Beverley becoming parents will be an interesting ride, especially given Peter's conversation with Tyburn. I just hope that all the little dropped threads will be picked up again for future books, instead of left hanging.
