Grace and Fury by Tracy Banghart

5.0

Grace & Fury tells the story of sisters Serina and Nomi, two women in a world where they are seen as property instead of intelligent beings. Serina has trained to be a Grace, someone who will be considered to serve the Heir of the Superior. Nomi is a rebel, someone who tends to speak out against the rules and expectations of the kingdom. One is destined to be a Grace to the Heir, the other, destined to fight for her life.

Grace & Fury was an excellent story. I personally love the duo POVs and how it was not quite what I was expecting. In the first chapter, I expected that Nomi would be the one that would be taken away and Serina would fulfill her duty as a Grace. But wham! Right off the top, Nomi gets unexpectedly picked to be a Grace and Serina gets taken away for something that Nomi did. Then it all seemed like it was going to be a story of underdogs and overthrows. Nomi gets ins with the younger son of the Superior, Asa, and he makes his older brother and Heir to the throne seem like a malevolent sadist. Asa says that the Superior and the Heir are both wrong for the kingdom, and he wants Nomi's help to become the only option for Heir, and in doing so he would help to free Serina. At first I was like "okay...we're going to have a classic overthrow of the kingdom to make it better for the main characters and everything will be all roses and daisies afterwards. I can handle that." But something to me just didn't feel right about Asa, and when Malachi said that he was the one who gave Nomi the book as a test to see if she could read, I immediately thought "okay, game changer. This is now going to be a story where a man exploits a girl's passionate feelings for something to gain the upper hand in his own agenda. He's really the malevolent one." So even though I knew this is where the story was turning towards, I still highly enjoyed reading it. I didn't expect Asa to actually kill the Superior himself, I thought he would think too highly of himself to do that, but him also besting Malachi surprised me.
Serina's side of the story to me was a little bland, I feel like she could have used more exposure throughout the story. Since she grew up with a sister who openly voiced her disgust with the way things in their kingdom were run, it made sense that she finally started to realize these things and was able to get a revolution going. I also did like that things didn't go so smoothly for her, that she was only able to talk to one other tribe before she was more or less found out and an attempt was made on her life. I also love Val!! I really hope there is another book and we get to learn more about him.
I was also a sucker and took everything at face value for the first half of the book, believing that Asa was all sweet and meant what he said. I had started to really like him and believe in him, so when I saw the change in him coming when Malachi was finally open with Nomi about what he had done, I was sad and a little annoyed with myself for being sucked in by what Nomi saw. Malachi started to become a great character, challenging Nomi and respecting when she challenged him back.

I really hope there is more to this series, as it was left on quite the cliffhanger. Anything is possible for Nomi and Serina next, and it would be great to see them reunited again!
