The Ashes and the Star-Cursed King by Carissa Broadbent
4.5
Once again, this audiobook narration was epic, but this time we had a male narrator for the chapters from Raihn’s POV. I loved the additional POV, which I needed in order to understand his actions.
I think a lot of people were understandably upset with Oraya and her personality shift, but I guess I’ve watched the Underworld movies enough times to have been VERY suspicious of Vincent, even after the heir thing. The devil you know sometimes isn’t better than the one you don’t and I felt like Raihn couldn’t have faked his feelings. It’s clear that Vincent hid quite a bit from her and it would be very difficult to have gone straight into revenge mode when you’re not even sure what direction Up is anymore.
I liked watching Raihn and Oraya find ways to learn to trust each other and find ways to come together against Septimus, who was creepy and powerful. I enjoyed getting to know more Vincent through the items, family, and secrets Oraya was able to find. I loved Mische and getting to know more about her as well.
I am glad I listened to the audiobook because it was fantastic, but also less annoying than reading “There she is.” 17 million times because I think reading it in print would have made me annoyed with Raihn a bit. I guess it felt more natural to have it be spoken? Idk. But the phrase was heavily used and somewhat irritating after so much of it.
I love the world and all of the gods/goddesses, secrets, factions, and people in this series and can’t wait to read more in this world. I actually just want to devour everything from the author.
This wasn’t nearly as amazing as book 1, but I genuinely enjoyed it!
