Genesis Begins Again by Alicia D. Williams

5.0

What a wonderful novel. Genesis is a heartbreakingly relatable character and very believably written. She feels like a young girl, instead of an adult reminiscing or someone trying to guess what a young teen would sound like.

This book is not a comfortable, tied-up-in-a-bow-at-the-end story. It's a distressing, prickly and triumphant read. Genesis is a young girl who hates herself because of the adults and other kids in her life. She suffers racism at the hands of classmates, colourism from her grandmother and father, and neglect from her alcoholic father (who himself has a sad past). The book begins when the family (Genesis, her mom and dad) are evicted for the third time
and the book ends as they are about to be evicted for the forth time
.

I've seen a few people say the actual storyline is quite basic and I just want to know how much you could want in a realistic depiction of a young girl's life? This book will speak to a lot of people and I'd love to see it brought into classroom discussion. I highly recommend the audiobook read by the author. Alicia D. Williams is a fantastic voice actor and you can really feel the passion she has for her book.
