Mermaids in Paradise by Lydia Millet
4.0
When I saw the title of this book I knew I had to read it. I've never really experienced a book quite like it seemed, and boy was I in for a ride.
Mermaids in Paradise follows Deb and Chip, a newly married couple on their honeymoon when they discover mermaids in a cove near a resort. they gather a team to document their findings but things go wrong and the resort finds out about their discovery. The resort quickly decides to monetize this and so many things happen. This book is a genre trip and a satirical masterpiece. It's about how we as humans mess everything up, it's a treatise on capitalism and environmental destruction, it's about political power and crazed millionaires. It's a truly remarkable feat on Lydia Millet's part to be able to write something so truly funny and entertaining while still showing us all of our flaws.
I'm surprised by how low of a rating this book has on here, but I get that it's really not for everyone. You have to be open to satire and scrutiny, and willing to accept that this is not like any other book you'll read. I recommend it to the kinds of readers who want to find true meaning in a book... a very outlandish and comedic book at that!
The reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5, however, is that some of the dialogue felt convoluted and I had a few issues with some plot points. Overall though it was an incredible read!!
Don't sleep own this book. It's hard to believe that not was published in 2015 (upon writing this review it is 2022) because the issues it presents are still way too common today. Give Mermaids a chance and read this book!!
