Circe by Madeline Miller

A tale that shines light on the naiad daughter of the Sun, Circe is a journey of self-discovery, becoming, and being. As an outcast in the halls of the lesser and greater gods, our title character finds comfort through dwelling with mortals - learning about the vitality of life and nature that surrounds her; and the capriciousness of death that no human that she loves, can escape. Hundreds of years pass alongside a couple of hundred mistakes and joy and laughter, Circe must face the gods that sought to wreck her by ultimately answering life's question - where does she truly belong?

For the longest time, no book has ever made me pause reading just so I can clutch and aid my writhing chest. Miller's prose is beautiful - no frills and laces - just truth and simplicity that magnifies the story and emotions that Circe brings. This is indeed a story of will, intention, and determination - of accepting failure and knowing that you can get through it. More importantly, it is a reminder that we have the final say on the person that we become.

As a young woman, I feel empowered by this story. As a reader, I feel enchanted. As a human being, I feel grounded. What a magnificent first read of 2021.

(This is my first Madeline Miller. I have no Song of Achilles to compare it to but after reading this golden book, I can't wait to get my hands on Achilles soon.)
