The Queen of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner

5.0

Second read, 2021:

Again, I am floored by MWT's skill, and I don't know why I didn't like this one as much the first time. This time the only boring part was some of the war strategy. But it's still intriguing if you can make yourself understand it.

As for the romance... yes, it's controversial, and I understand why. This time around, knowing it was coming, I could see all the clues that the author set up... and I think it's perfect. It's a story of redemption and second chances and letting go of emotional masks to admit you love someone. The whole last few chapters are masterful and marvelous, and there's a Till We Have Faces-type encounter with the gods that's left me shivering in awe.

Go read this book. :)

Original review (2020):

I didn't enjoy this one *quite* as much as the first, but I think that was because I was so used to being in Eugenides' head, and seeing him through others' eyes was a huge change. I like it now, though.

This book is probably my favorite of the series so far (I still haven't read the sixth book). It reads a little like a historical fiction (or even a history book, with all the detail about the different countries). I already knew a little of the ending when I started it, so I wasn't shocked when
SpoilerEugenides confessed he loved Attolia
, but it's definitely a bit... weird.
