Ace: What Asexuality Reveals about Desire, Society, and the Meaning of Sex by Angela Chen

informative reflective slow-paced

4.0

This was hard to rate because I’m not used to non-fiction. Though it took me ages to finish (the book felt longer than it was), I liked what I learned, and it was definitely food for thought. It’s an informative read and made me want to check out some of the material referenced throughout the book. I liked that the author referred to her and other people’s experiences. It served well to show that asexuality is a spectrum and that the ace experience is different for everyone. I also enjoyed the mentions of how asexuality intersects with other parts of people’s identities, such as race, gender and disability.

It was sometimes repetitive, but it was mostly a smooth reading experience. The chapter dedicated to one person wasn’t well articulated with the rest of the book. I would’ve liked it if she referred to that person’s experience throughout the book like the others.
