The Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith

Actually a really enjoyable kids' book!

Considering its age, it holds up brilliantly with some fun things to think about scattered here and there. To get the negatives out of the way, the book falls into “Men smart, Women Emotional” stereotypes, and the Romani representation is bad, for a couple of pages they’re randomly portrayed as money-hungry and cruel. Once you get past the bad takes that were commonplace for the era it was published ( I find remembering that for the time-period, this book was probably rather progressive, for example when:
one female character deigns to wear trousers confidently
), at the very least the book presents a loving and considerate couple with Pongo and Misses. The scenes with the puppies are adorable, and for both adults and kids, there are a lot of easy-to-follow action and adventure elements.

I enjoyed this immensely, a childhood classic!
