Lesser Known Monsters of the 21st Century by Kim Fu

A truly stunning collection of stories that mainly center around imagined futures and different kinds of monsters; societal, fantastical, and personal. Grapples with issues like societal collapse and climate change while also illustrating poignant human relationships. Stories are short and often jarring, and I continuously found myself craving more. There were many stories that I felt ended abruptly and could’ve benefitted from more resolution. Although well written, I think I enjoyed half of the stories while the other half fell a bit flat; definitely a mixed bag. Favorites from this collection are: Pre-Simulation Consultation XF007867, Liddy, First to Fly, #ClimbingNation, June Bugs, Bridezilla, and Do You Remember Candy. The final story is incredible; eerily reminiscent of COVID and capitalism’s need to push forward no matter what.
