The Adversary: A True Story of Monstrous Deception by Emmanuel Carrère

dark informative mysterious sad tense medium-paced

2.5

A psychological profile and biography of Jean-Claude Romand, a purported Doctor that kills his entire family. Carrère details the life of lies that Jean-Claude lived, trying to piece together exactly how he was able to pretend to be a doctor for nearly two decades and what caused him to commit such a heinous crime. While the French media painted the picture of a master manipulator, Carrère’s “Dr.” Romand is more of a coward; a man who dug a hole so deep with his compounding lies that he felt he had no way out. While it is well written, I didn’t find the story particularly striking, just infuriating. Romand is a dull, vanilla man, somewhat of a baby, whose crimes are those of circumstances and luck that help him avoid confronting the truth. It wasn’t my favorite True Crime story, but I could see the Coen brothers doing something great with it, like the hapless Jerry in Fargo.
