Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes: Removing Cultural Blinders to Better Understand the Bible by Brandon J. O'Brien, E. Randolph Richards

challenging informative medium-paced

4.0

This book had some problems, but overall I really enjoyed it and (more importantly) it really made me think. I especially got a lot from collectivist culture versus individualistic culture and honor/shame culture vs guilt/rules culture. I know a number of people in reviews I read complained about the frequent references to Indonesia, saying that Indonesian culture is not an all the same as ancient Middle Eastern culture. I agree that the two are not directly comparable, but I feel like the technique was more to allow us a glimpse of how different cultures interpret different things rather than trying to say that Indonesian culture is more like the culture of the Bible. I will be recommending this book to my friends.
