Just when you thought what was going to happen with Colby and Ryan based off the ending of the last book, no worries because in this book there was plenty more of friends to lovers, love triangle, trying to hide feelings for said best friend, angst, romance, and more!
The book picked up following the ending of, “The Left Side of Perfect”, when Colby proposed to Sage and Ryan trying to distance herself from Colby. In the last book, Ryan came to the conclusion that she was in love with Colby, but since Colby was with Sage and they were engaged, Ryan tried to accept the fact that Colby was with the woman he was meant to be with, and she lost her chance at being with the man she loved. In, “The Right Side Of Forever”, Ryan used the approach of “getting over someone, by getting underneath someone else” by hooking up with Donovan (Leah’s boyfriend Tyler’s friend). Ryan kind of reverted back to her old habits of being with a man that wasn’t necessarily the best person for her in terms of a serious relationship and having depth for more. If anything, with Donovan it was all lust and desire with Ryan, but for Ryan, she felt like in a way she using Donovan too in order to escape and drown out her thoughts of Colby. Probably not the best way to approach a problem, but hey no judgment towards Ryan on her decision, I can somewhat understand where she was coming from.
This book felt a bit more angst compared to the first book, especially with Ryan trying to deal with her feelings about Colby and Colby feeling hurt and unsure of what happened with his friendship with Ryan. With Ryan trying to distance herself from Colby, Colby started to feel scared of losing his best friend. Just goes to show that compared to the first book where in the beginning he wasn’t on board with calling Ryan his bestie, the progress in that book and this book highlighted just how much Colby grew to strongly care about Ryan and their friendship. Even earlier on, I could tell that while Colby was worried about Ryan I was thinking, “Psh just wait until he realizes that HE’S ALSO IN LOVE WITH HIS BEST FRIEND!” While Colby wasn’t fully aware of the true depth of his feelings for Ryan, it was through his chapters and how he talked about Ryan that further reinforced my thoughts that, yup this man not only cares for Ryan’s well-being, but he’s the one she’s meant to be with.
Meanwhile, in what most would assume to be all lovey dovey, Sage and Colby weren’t the same anymore. Between Colby getting angry at Sage for wanting him to get rid of his model airplanes, to the lack of intimacy they shared in the bedroom, to not much communication between them in planning their wedding, it seemed like the “honeymoon” phase in their relationship was not only dying, but was starting to show that maybe… they weren’t the right people for each other. Again, I have to say that Sage was not a horrible person, she was sweet. With Colby not telling her everything such as, the importance behind his model airplanes, of course Sage is going to think nothing of them other than just a waste of space. You would think that being engaged to the person you love, they would know everything about you, but it was clear that Colby was still withholding things about himself, his past, and the fact that Ryan knew essentially everything about him as opposed to his fiancé, Sage… well you can guess where I’m going with this, maybe it wasn’t meant to be. I think in the beginning of the last book, Colby saw Sage as someone he could settle down with, they got along, and overall seemed like a good match, but in this book you got to see that just because something looks good on paper doesn’t necessarily mean it will be perfect.
Thankfully the moment Colby and Ryan confessed their feelings for one another had me like, “YES! FINALLY!” Truly the moment when the laid everything out, and told each other how they loved each other, and wanted to be together made me very happy. Colby and Ryan’s chemistry was great, and their friendship turned romantic relationship was natural, easy, and they both felt a sense of peace being around each other. It was as if they both felt a weight come off their shoulders and finally found their happiness with each other. The romance between them was passionate, sweet, and still very much in tune with how Ryan and Colby acted around each other which was fun and loving.
The next few chapters of the book (after confessing their love to one another) seemed like the beginning of Ryan and Colby’s relationship seeing them in their “honeymoon” stage, but also taking advantage of finally being together meaning spending time together whenever possible, going out on dates, and the occasional if not very often steamy sessions in Ryan’s air mattress the first time (as well as the next morning where it popped due to Colby *wink), Colby’s kitchen counter and floor, essentially LOTS OF SPICE BETWEEN THOSE TWO AMAZING!
Just when I thought the angst was over, nope there was still more, but it made sense especially with Ryan’s character growth. Despite Ryan finally being with Colby, she was still dealing with the insecurities she had grown up with due to her mother’s constant emotional and mental abusive over the years, and that kind of thing doesn’t just vanish. Ryan was still trying to figure out the kind of woman she was, and realized that while she was happy and in love with Colby, she wasn’t in the best head space to be in a relationship when she needed to work on loving herself first and put in work to better herself. Poor Colby was devastated when Ryan left, but I was glad to see that Ryan was making sure to work on herself and work through all the body shaming and bullying she went through. That aspect of the story highlighted Ryan’s growth and showed that her problems weren’t easy to fix. In addition, with the letters Colby wrote to Ryan, AWWW SO ROMANTIC!
Overall, a story I wasn’t expecting to have fallen in love with so much. This book (duet) went beyond my expectations and was amazing. Ryan and Colby’s story was beautiful, deep, had moments of angst, but also great character growth for Ryan. Colby and Ryan may have started out as complete opposites and just friends, but their relationship grew to be something stronger and a love story that had its ups and downs. The meaning behind their “left side of perfect and right side of forever” was heartfelt, and I cannot get over this duet. Literally stayed up reading, couldn’t get enough. Meghan Quinn did a phenomenal job, and my precious Ryan and Colby got their happy ending (THE EPILOGUE AWWW!)
