So You've Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson
5.0
I've been really excited to read this since Ronson published his article about Justine Sacco, and I really, really loved it. So You've Been Publicly Shamed explores the rise in social media, especially Twitter, 'justice'; where regular people can come together to punish someone who has done something wrong. Whilst, as Ronson says, some of these were for good i.e. the decimation of Jan Muir over a column about the death of Stephen Gateley; sometimes these storms have been colossal overreactions with devastating impacts on the life of those at the centre.
So You've Been Publicly Shamed explores why it could be that we get pulled into these discussions, what motivates people to bring 'awareness' to the mistakes of others and how some people can come out of public shamings virtually unscathed whilst others are completely traumatised by them.
It was definitely a book that made me think; about the times where I've been sucked into this and then swiftly felt awful (that scientist involved in the first probe landing on Mars who wore *that* shirt) and about how there needs to be a space online where people don't have to be perfect every time. I'm still really sorting out how I feel about this, but I would really recommend it.
