13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl by Mona Awad
3.0
Lizzie doesn't like the way she looks. Though she dates guys online, she's afraid to send pictures: no-one wants a fat girl.
So Lizzie starts to lose weight, with punishing drive. But no matter how much she loses, will she ever see herself as anything other than a fat girl?
Mona Awad once again delivers a narrator navigating pain. A main character struggling to conform to the whims of society. Awad really brings you to the epicentre of the characters thoughts, feelings, dreams and desires. There’s a complexity to all of her characters that is seldom seen to her degree.
I love that Awad’s books make me feel a certain way. The books draw back the neat curtain and show you the messy stage. In 13 Ways of Looking At A Fat Girl I reflected on societies views about what humans should look like. How that drives consumerism by creating doubt in our minds and preys on our physical and mental health.
Overall this book was gritty and sad, as is Awad’s style but they really make you think. And she can write pain like no other. Thank you @bookalong and @cozyinthenook for reading another Awad together. I’m looking forward to what’s next, 3.5✨
