Trick Mirror: Reflections on Self-Delusion by Jia Tolentino

5.0

In this incredible mix of memoir, cultural criticism, and research, Tolentino holds a mirror (not a trick mirror) to society and how the way we view the world through that “trick mirror” and the self delusion that she, and the rest of us have.

Jia Tolentino takes us through her life in stages, starting as a child discovering the Internet, taking us up into 2017 & 18 where she describes her issues with marriage. We see how the Internet, reality tv, and the con artists that thrive on both spaces, shape the world as a whole, and especially the lives of women. Tolentino, in placing herself in the criticism, shows she and the rest of us make sense of the world of a millennial.

In short, this is some of the best memoir and cultural criticism I have ever read and I would love to read more.
