The Big Reveal: An Illustrated Manifesto of Drag by Sasha Velour

5.0

I had the privilege to see Sasha Velour's performance/book reading/book signing recently in Ottawa and pick up her amazing new drag manifesto, which combines drag history and queer theory with memoir and art in the form of photographs and cartoons. The Big Reveal invites the audience to connect with who Sasha Velour is: smart, wicked, funny, thoughtful, creative and bizarre - at the same time as teaching important queer and drag history from different eras, around the globe. There's a lot of thoughtful substance to the writing - I particularly appreciated the sections on camp and activism - but the style is very accessible and straightforward. If you're a fan of Sasha Velour or just want to know more about the history and contemporary art of drag, this book is a great place to start.
