She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan
5.0
Filled with complex morally-gray characters, this was a fascinating read.
She who became the sun is very good! It reads more historical fiction than fantasy (though there are definite fantasy elements). Tackles the concept of gender from different perspectives as well as what people are willing to do to circumvent their fate. It’s a duo, but the first book finishes at a strong point. I looked up the actual dynasty afterwards, and it follows things fairly closely, so I wouldn’t recommend doing that if you want to avoid spoilers.
