Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
5.0
This book was not the book I expected it to be at all. I was expecting a romance. It is not a romance. A love story? Yes, a romance? Well, I would hardly call a relationship so selfish (it ruins not only the lives of those involved but also their entire families) romantic. I thought Wuthering Heights would be a ghost story. Not really, there's a few paranormal pieces at the very beginning and again towards the end, but by far the most terrifying thing in the book is how horrible of people the main protagonists are. That is not to say that the book wasn't dark. It was, and I love the way Emily Bronte was able to create a dark and ominous atmosphere throughout it, despite the fact that most of the story is just gossip being told in front of the fireplace. I am so glad this book turned out to be so much different than I expected it to be!
Wuthering Heights is really a look into how hatred, isolation, and abuse can completely change a person. None of these characters are likeable, none of these characters are even redeemable, but that doesn't mean the reader doesn't end up sympathizing with each of them at one point or another. It doesn't make the story bad or unenjoyable. This story is amazing, it is a book I would (and probably will) read again, and if you knew me, you'd know I don't use that statement lightly.
