De raaf by Louis Beyens

5.0

The book opens with an enchanting description of the tundra and as if that wasn't enough to get me hooked, the author tells us that he was collection moss plants. Within a couple of pages we learn that ravens can make 4 year plans. Four years!
The chapter I found the most interesting was about the relationship between ravens and wolves. Ravens adjust the group size of foraging wolves. What!? If you want to know how, read the book. You should definitely read the book!
It was also good that Beyens explained that predators, also ravens, don't normally affect the size of their prey population, so it really doesn't make sense to kill predators.
The chapters on cultural aspects were also really interesting. "From the first human cultures, the raven has had a place in the cosmic experience of people". Wow!
