Yeah, I think I just need to accept that I’m not a fan of short form poetry. This has absolutely nothing to do with Akwaeke’s writing; there were some really interesting thoughts/themes explored in this collection. However, all the poems just felt like singular thoughts. For example, a lot of the poems followed the through-line of Akwaeke speaking as though religious figures were members of their family (Mary Magdalene as an Auntie, Joseph as an Uncle). Rather than the poems with this theme being separated and scattered throughout the collection, I think it would’ve been more impactful if they were just lumped together and explored in one long, epic poem.
