The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats
4.0
2018 reading: Perfect! I waited all term for a snowy week to read this with my students.
Mother Tongue Notes: This is a great visual example of a black child just being a child. No heavy-handed message, or struggles against an excluding culture. It’s also good to normalize a child being comfortable and familiar in the snowy weather who doesn’t present as a Scandinavian native. There are hints that Peter lives in an apartment.
Good for readers just past the beginning stage. There are several scenes where the students can be encouraged to predict what happens on the next page. Several examples of -ight words.
